Voici le texte, inédit en français, d'un document de travail rédigé par Freud en 1931 pour affermir la culture analytique du diplomate américain William C. Bullitt, qui préparait un ouvrage consacré au président T.W. Wilson. Il s'agit d'un bref résumé des grands principes de la psychanalyse, tels que Freud les avait alors constitués.
